Cross-country Skiing at Riverside Ranch

Well the winter is on it's way out but we still have a lot of snow in the fields.  This brings with it spring skiing on the crust of the snow!  It is very exciting since my farm has rolling hills and one can get quite the speed up on the way down!  Since I have to feed the horses and go to work for around 10 am I strap on the skiis and make a round while the crust is on.  It freezes every night and during the day it warms up to above freezing.  Therefore in the morning while frost is still on the skiing is fantastic!!

Introducing Dakota

Dakota, the horse, came to Riverside Ranch 7 years ago.  He arrived here as a boarder and won the right to be the boss of the herd in a dramatic battle with the leader of the time.  He had a kicking match which I had to watch and hope neither would end up with serious injuries.  The former leader (Big Guy) actually beat him to the ground.  A small pony he had bonded with called to him and led him far from the herd for the rest of that night.

A Cute Velvet Picture

I was saying how Velvet had got hurt.  Her eye is much better now 5 days later.  Swelling has gone down.  It is looking very good.

Sunny Day at Riverside Ranch

It is the second day of spring and still the entire farm is under about 3 feet of snow!  We are getting a little sick of winter around here.  The firewood pile is down to the last hurrah and still we are getting way below freezing temperatures.  The horses are getting a little tired of the hay but of course gobble up everything I put down for them twice a day.

So I have been trying to download some pictures to go with the blog and give an idea how the farm looks but had no luck.  Now I am trying again and hopefully will succeed.  Now I am registered with Image shack so lets see how it goes.

The farm and horses

This is something new for me but I think it is great!  This farm is my passion and my horses are my friends and partners since together we take people for rides around this fantastic property.  To share the beauty of nature with people that do not have the opportunity to experience it is the greatest feeling.  I have been taking people out riding for about 20 years and been riding myself for most of my 54 years.  It is an amazing relationship between horse and rider.  The communication would not be believed by anyone who has not experienced it themselves.
